Deep in the vortex of the tyrannies which are destroying humanity and the earth itself is the War on Drugs. Ending this war by reasonable means (replacing prohibition with sensible and non-prohibitory government regulation) is one of the easiest steps we can take toward saving humanity and the planet.
If we can't end the War on Drugs, all else is probably hopeless. Around the world, 500 billion dollars a year are spent on illegal drugs which would only cost a few tens of billions if supplied legally. The remaining hundreds of billions of dollars fuel organized crime, violence, corruption, and the destruction of beneficial civil authority throughout the world.
Over a hundred billion dollars a year are spent at all levels of government around the world attempting to stop the use of some drugs. Not only are these attempted prohibitions ineffective, they actually make drug problems worse by scaring people from admitting problems they have to others and freely seeking the treatment they may need. Drug treatment (except prison) is usually not available for those who need it; if drugs were legal, the drugs could be taxed to provide free drug treatment for all who want it. This would cost far less than current regime and be much more effective in reducing harm from drugs. (In countries that have decriminalized drugs, serious drug problems have decreased; further improvements could be achieved with worldwide legalization.)
The War on Drugs is one of the most far-reaching tyrannies of our time. Millions of people around the world are in prison for what amount to political reasons -- laws attempting to usurp the control of individuals over their own bodies...
